The paper outlines the features of six different republican models, which represent the broad range of republican opinion, from the most minimal change, through to a reworked version of the 1999 model, to an electoral college model, direct election and a US style system.

The ARM believes that the question of the republican model is a matter for the Australian people to decide. The ARM does not advocate one model over others, nor does it suggest that this list is exhaustive of republican models. We note that there are other sound and workable models devised by other individuals and republican groups.

Five of the models outlined in the 6 Models for an Australian Republic Discussion Paper were included in the ARM's submission to the 2004 Senate Inquiry into an Australian Republic on the question of models. Not having detected much support for a US style system, Model Six in the ARM's discussion paper - the only model that establishes the Head of State as the Head of Government - was not submitted to the Senate Inquiry.
