Conservatives for an Australian Head of State are:
- a national organisation launched on 24 January 1999, aiming to give
a voice to conservatively minded Australians who support a change to
an Australian head of state, while retaining our current system of government;
- supportive of the Constitutional Convention's model appointing an
Australian head of state, with no other changes in the way we are governed;
- opposed to any attempt to undermine state autonomy and the long-standing
parliamentary systems and conventions which have served Australia so
well;
- firmly of the view that it is time we took the final small, yet symbolic
step, and chose an Australian as head of state;
- convinced there are a large number of cautious Australians, across
the political spectrum, who share our view;
- actively promoting a YES vote at the referendum in November this year.
A YES Committee has been established by the government to oversee the
publicly funded $7.5 million campaign to promote the YES case.
Prime Minister John Howard has appointed a representative of Conservatives
for an Australian Head of State (CAHS), Professor Greg Craven of Western
Australia, to the YES committee.
Founding members of the federal committee include:
- Professor Greg Craven
- Robert Champion de Crespigny
- The Hon Paul Everingham AO
- Charles Goode
- Paul Houlihan
- Michael Lishman
- Emeritus Prof Jack Richardson AO
- Andrew Robb
- Deane Russell
- Fiona Sinclair
- Professor Judith Sloan
- The Hon Warwick Smith
- The Hon Michael Yabsley
