ARM MEDIA RELEASE - 9 November 2004
2004 National Republican Lecture tonight
Melbourne-based business executive and entrepreneur Huy Truong - who came to Australia as a refugee at the age of seven - will deliver the 2004 National Republican Lecture tonight at 6.15pm at the Hellenic Club in Canberra.
In his lecture, How an Australian Republic Can Engage
the Migrant Community: A Personal Perspective,
Mr Truong will reflect on the ways in which an Australian
republic might encourage and strengthen the contribution
made by newer migrants to the nation's public life.
The lecture follows the Inaugural National Republican Lecture delivered by Richard Woolcott AC last year. The Australian Republican Movement initiated the lecture series to provide the opportunity for distinguished Australians to give their perspective on why they see a republic as a logical step for Australia, and on how a republic can be achieved. By provoking public debate on the issue, the ARM hopes the lectures will give renewed impetus and clarity to the push for Australia to become a republic.
The Lecture is a free event. Mr Truong will be available for media interviews following his address. Copies of the Lecture are available on request.
