New
Convenor for ARM in South Australia
State Convenor of the Australian
Republican Movement, Mr David Abfalter announced today
that he would not seek another term as Convenor of
the South Australian Branch of the ARM.
"My
decision has been influenced by a number of factors,"
Mr Abfalter said, "The personal criticism directed
towards me by a minority of republican supporters
has acted as a distraction from our sole objective
- achieving an Australian Head of State.
"But
more importantly, it has been the practice in South
Australia for the Convener to serve a term of one
year. Until recently there was not a candidate offering
to take over from me. Now that Tony Cocchiaro has
nominated, there is no reason for us not to continue
our existing practice and put our support behind him
as the new Convenor for this last, and most crucial,
year of our campaign." Mr Abfalter said.
The Chairman of the ARM, Malcolm Turnbull said this
morning, "David Abfalter has made an immense contribution
to the cause of a republic in South Australia. He
has been a strong and effective leader and has won
the respect of the ARM and its supporters right around
the country. I am sure that he will remain one of
our key leaders working for a Yes vote in the months
ahead."
