To Downer and Flint
In respect of your comments the other day, When you swore your sad oath and then gave us a spray;
We won't ridicule you, though we easily could,
Your risible qualities are well understood.
But we've other cards we'd much rather play,
As you grumble and grizzle and stand in our way.
Whilst you believe in the divine right of Kings,
In empty tradition and such meaningless things, We place our faith in democracy,
A firm belief each should be equally free.
Yet your love of old titles still tarries and clings
And stops Australia from spreading its wings.
So, we don't need to mock you, or even acknowledge you again. We are sure, in your way, you are decent enough men. But, truth to be told, we don't care about you.
We have a job to complete that is long overdue.
We just wonder if ever you'll begin to fathom when
It's time to admit an independent Australian nation.
