Pointing the way to a republic

AUSTRALIAN republicans remain divided over whether our head of state should be directly or indirectly elected. One consideration that weighs heavily with indirect electionists like Anthony Albanese is that "we should avoid any appearance of conflict between the prime minister and the president".

This is of course an important consideration, but so far Australian republicans have paid little attention to the ways in which such "conflict"has been handled in other countries.

The most rapidly growing model of republicanism in the modern world — semipresidentialism — has found ways of managing this issue.
