Pressure for 2010 vote on republic

THE Federal Government is under pressure to commit to running a republic plebiscite with the 2010 election after the issue was revitalized at the 2020 Summit. Almost nine years after the failed 1999 republic referendum, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday declared Australia would become a republic this century, but said it was hard to say whether this would be before the Queen's reign ended.
