Across Australia, the YES republican coalition began its
campaign for upcoming republic referendum and released its
republican declaration. The coalition
brings together all republican groups advocating a YES vote,
including the Australian Republican Movement, the Real Republic
group, Young Australians for a Republic, and Conservatives
for an Australian Head of State. Read the ARM's Media

Andrew Robb, former Director of the Federal Liberal Party,
has launched a new group called Conservatives
for an Australian Head of State who will campaign for
a YES vote in this year's referendum. Mr Robb said that the
new group aims to persuade naturally cautious and conservative-minded
Australians that the move to an Australian Head of State is
a positive and important symbolic step which will not risk
our political stability.

The republic referendum is only about eleven months away!
Whilst the Government has not set the final date as yet, the
ARM understands that November 6 and November 13 are being
considered for the referendum. All republicans will need to
put in a final burst of effort this year to secure the YES
vote and see Australia become a republic on the first day
of the 21st century, 1 January 2001. It is now or never! The
debate has also been hotting up in the media - an open letter
by former Chief Justice Sir Anthony Mason in December set
the debate alight again with a well-considered development
of the public nomination process. Read the ARM's Media
Release.
