Queen Elizabeth II: release the letters

Professor Jenny Hocking of Monash University has launched Federal Court action to force the release of key correspondence between the Queen and former Governor-General John Kerr in relation to the 1975 dismissal of the Whitlam Government. The correspondence has been declared ‘personal’ and therefore secret at “Her Majesty the Queen’s instructions,” despite potentially being instrumental in the bringing down of an elected Australian government. The letters are a matter of national history and should be open for the national record. Regardless of the merits or otherwise of the dismissal, it is crucial that Australians know the extent to which the Queen involved herself in the sacking of an Australian Government.

If you agree, please show your support by signing the petition below.

We, the undersigned petitioners of Australia, call on the Queen to release all correspondence in relation to the dismissal of the Whitlam Government in 1975, and to commit to full transparency in her past and present dealings with the Australian Government, Parliament and senior government officials.
